This Thank a Golf Course Superintendent Day, we step behind the scenes to recognize Golf Course Superintendent and Regional Agronomist Chris Bien, and the dedicated team whose quiet, meticulous work helps make every round at Desert Willow a story worth remembering.

The Hidden Work Behind Every Great Round

There is a certain stillness at Desert Willow in the early morning, before the first groups arrive and the desert sun begins to stretch across the fairways.

For Chris and our course maintenance team, that quiet is already filled with purpose.

Long before a golfer reads a putt, settles into a perfect lie, or pauses to take in the mountain views, countless details have been considered, measured, and cared for. Course conditions don’t simply happen overnight. They are the result of planning, agronomic expertise, careful observation, teamwork, and a willingness to continually adapt.

At Desert Willow, every detail is a deliberate choice.

That philosophy guides Chris and his team as they work toward a clear goal:

Deliver the premium playing surfaces our guests expect while staying ahead of the long-term challenges of maintaining turf in the desert.

Leadership Rooted in the Details

A graduate of Cornell’s Turfgrass Maintenance program, Chris brings more than a decade of desert golf expertise to his role at Desert Willow.

As both Golf Course Superintendent and Regional Agronomist, he approaches the work with a combination of technical knowledge and hands-on leadership. Sustainability, innovation, and playability are not separate objectives; together, they help guide the decisions that shape the golf experience.

And much of that work happens where guests may never see it.

It happens in early mornings, changing weather conditions, irrigation decisions, turf management practices, equipment preparation, and the hundreds of details evaluated by a team that understands that seemingly small decisions can have a meaningful impact on a golfer’s round.

That dedication is ultimately reflected in something every golfer can appreciate: the playing surface beneath their feet.

Excellence Our Guests Can Feel

Perhaps the most meaningful measure of that work comes directly from the golfers who experience it.

For calendar year 2025, Desert Willow received a combined guest survey score of 9.5 out of 10 for course conditions. Those guest ratings earned Desert Willow recognition for Top Course Conditions in the KemperSports Public Access Portfolio, an honor presented at the KemperSports Leadership Conference in February.

For Chris and the team, recognition like this represents more than a number.

It reflects thousands of individual guest experiences, the first look down a fairway, the roll of a putt across a well-prepared green, and the confidence of knowing that the course has been thoughtfully cared for before you ever arrive at the first tee.

It is a clear example of a brand promise not simply communicated, but consistently delivered.

Celebrating Chris Bien

This year brings another reason to celebrate.

Chris was named the 2026 59club USA Superintendent of the Year through the Service Excellence Awards, recognizing his commitment to excellence and the standard of care he brings to his profession.

It is a well-deserved honor, and one we are proud to celebrate.

But perhaps one of the qualities that best represents Chris’s leadership is that course maintenance is never the work of one person. Exceptional playing conditions are created by a team, people bringing skill, pride, consistency, and attention to their responsibilities every day.

Chris’s leadership helps bring those efforts together around a shared purpose: creating the best possible experience for every golfer who steps onto the course.

A Day to Say Thank You

Thank a Golf Course Superintendent Day is dedicated to recognizing the incredible men and women who meticulously care for golf courses and make it possible for golfers around the world to enjoy the game they love.

One day could never fully recognize the early mornings, long days, specialized knowledge, problem-solving, and dedication that go into caring for a golf course.

But September 8 gives us an important opportunity to say something that isn’t said often enough:

A Memorial Day Tradition Continues: The 2026 City of Palm Desert Championship

A Memorial Day Weekend tradition built on great golf, friendly competition, and the people who make it special.

From incredible shots and close competition to the friendships and camaraderie that define the event, I’m excited to recap another unforgettable City of Palm Desert Championship and the players who made this year’s tournament so memorable.

One of the things I love most about golf is the traditions that bring people back year after year.

For many of us at Desert Willow, Memorial Day Weekend means it’s time for the City of Palm Desert Championship. It’s a weekend I look forward to every year, not just because of the competition, but because of the people. We see familiar faces returning to play with longtime friends, father-and-son teams teeing it up together, and new competitors experiencing the event for the first time.

Before the desert sun rises over the Santa Rosa Mountains, the clubhouse is already buzzing. Golfers are grabbing breakfast, checking in with their partners, and sharing stories from previous championships. The practice greens fill up, the nerves start to kick in, and you can feel that excitement that only tournament golf seems to bring.

As someone who grew up around the game and has spent the last 18 years at Desert Willow, those moments never get old.

This year marked the ninth City of Palm Desert Championship, and once again, the players made it a weekend to remember.

Two Courses. One Championship.

One of the things that makes this event unique is the opportunity to compete on both of Desert Willow’s championship courses.

Saturday’s round on Mountain View rewarded patience, strategy, and smart decision-making. Sunday’s final round on Firecliff asked players to dig a little deeper, execute under pressure, and trust their game when it mattered most.

The combination creates a great test of golf because it challenges teams in different ways. No matter your playing style, both courses ask you to stay committed to every shot.

Over two days of Best Ball and Scramble competition, teams battled for Gross and Net titles, and as always, the leaderboard stayed competitive right to the finish.

Championship Moments

One of the things I enjoy most about tournament golf is watching how a championship unfolds over two days. Momentum can shift quickly, and every shot has the potential to make a difference.

This year’s City Championship was competitive from start to finish, with teams battling through two very different tests on Mountain View and Firecliff. As always, the leaderboard remained tight throughout the weekend, and several teams put together impressive performances when it mattered most.

In the A Flight Gross Division, Len Komar and Chris Campbell put together two outstanding rounds, posting scores of 67 and 63 for a two-day total of 130 to earn the Gross Championship. Their consistency, teamwork, and ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities set them apart in a talented field.

The A Flight Net Championship was claimed by Denis Hagarty and Robert West, who delivered steady play throughout the weekend on their way to an impressive net total of 127.

In B Flight, Gabriel Esquer and Paul Carrasco turned in one of the strongest performances of the tournament, posting a remarkable two-day net score of 121 to capture the B Flight Net Championship.

Congratulations to all of our champions and to every team that competed. Tournament golf has a way of bringing out the best in players, and this year’s field showcased the sportsmanship, competitiveness, and passion for the game that make this event so enjoyable year after year.

More Than a Competition

While champions are crowned each year, the true success of the City of Palm Desert Championship is measured by the experiences shared along the way.

It’s the longtime friends who reunite each Memorial Day Weekend. The father-and-son teams creating new traditions. The first-time participants who discover what makes tournament golf so rewarding. The conversations after the round, the stories shared during lunch, and the memories that stay with players long after the final scores are posted.

Those moments are what continue to make this event one of my favorite weekends of the year.

As tournament coordinator, I am fortunate to witness firsthand the passion our players bring to the game and the sportsmanship they demonstrate throughout the competition. Whether competing for a championship or simply enjoying the experience, every participant contributes to the welcoming atmosphere that defines this event.

A Team Effort Behind the Scenes

A tournament like this doesn’t happen without a lot of great people working behind the scenes.

I’d like to personally thank our Golf Operations team, Course Maintenance staff, Food & Beverage team, tournament volunteers, and every Desert Willow team member who helped make the weekend such a success. From preparing the courses and coordinating logistics to serving breakfast and lunch with a smile, every detail matters.

One of the things that makes me proud to be part of Desert Willow is how many people come together to create an exceptional experience for our guests. It’s a true team effort, and I’m grateful for the dedication and professionalism everyone brings to the event each year.

Their hard work helps deliver the level of service our guests have come to expect while maintaining the welcoming atmosphere that makes Desert Willow feel like a “Country Club for a Day.”

Honoring the Meaning of Memorial Day

While we’re celebrating another great championship, it’s also important to remember why we gather on Memorial Day Weekend.

This holiday gives us the opportunity to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. We’re grateful for the freedoms that allow us to spend time with family, friends, and fellow golfers doing something we love, and we recognize those who made those moments possible.

Looking Ahead

The City of Palm Desert Championship continues to grow because of the incredible golfers who choose to make it part of their Memorial Day tradition.

To everyone who joined us this year, thank you. Your enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and love for the game are what make this event so special. Whether you were competing for a championship or simply enjoying a weekend of golf with friends, you helped create another memorable chapter in this tournament’s story.

“Keep Chopping Wood, Pro”: Honoring Cody Franke Through Folds of Honor

One Swing, One Scholarship, One Unforgettable Legacy.

Each November, the fairways at Desert Willow echo with purpose. This year, they’ll carry something even deeper, the memory of Cody Franke. Beloved teammate, mentor, and friend, Cody championed the Folds of Honor cause with heart, humor, and humility. On November 19, we gather to honor his legacy the best way we know how: by playing with purpose and giving back.

Some people leave a mark so deep, they reshape the way you approach each day, your profession, and your future.

For me, that person was Cody Franke.

I first met Cody at Ferris State University’s PGM Center back in 2015. He was dressed to the nines, flashing a signature smile that would become his trademark at Desert Willow. It was hands down the best interview I’ve ever had. Confident, warm, full of kindness. The kind of guy who made you want to be better, just by being in the room.

I couldn’t have been more excited when he accepted our internship.

That one “yes” turned into years of friendship, mentorship, and memories I’ll carry for a lifetime.

After completing his PGA internship, Cody rejoined the Desert Willow team in 2016 and he never looked back. For nearly seven years, he brought relentless energy, integrity, and humor to everything he touched. From the golf shop to the range, through events, lessons, fittings, and guest experiences, Cody led by example. In spring 2023, he accepted a promotion to be the Head Golf Professional at Thornberry Creek, another KemperSports property. Cody was motivated to be closer to his family in the Midwest, and as sad as we were to say goodbye, we were excited to watch him soar.

And then came something even bigger.

When we heard about Cody’s opportunity with Barstool Sports (which, let’s be honest, we had to keep quiet about for a while), we were thrilled. We knew the world was about to meet the Cody we’d all known and loved. And the world did.

I’ve taken time to reflect on my experiences with Cody, as I navigate the emotions of his passing. There were the endless rounds of golf (never enough), the road trips, the apparel appointments that somehow turned into comedy hours, the goodbye parties for coworkers that never really felt like goodbyes, and the long days made lighter by Cody’s joy and his uncanny ability to find laughter in just about anything.

And of course, there was Folds of Honor.

Each year, Cody led the charge for this cause. He believed in it deeply. Supporting the families of our nation’s fallen and disabled service members wasn’t just a checkbox for Cody, it was a calling. Whether we were playing 24 hours of golf straight, completing 100 hole fundraisers, dressing up as Santa on the first tee, or raising awareness through PGA HOPE, Cody showed us how the game we love can serve a greater good.

This year, our Folds of Honor Fundraiser is dedicated to Cody’s memory.

On November 19, we’ll gather on the Mountain View Course, transformed into an 18-hole Par 3 Shootout. It’s going to be fun, as it always is. But it’ll also feel different because we’re playing for something more. We’re playing in honor of a teammate who believed that kindness and purpose were par for the course.

Cody was the kind of guy you proudly introduced to your family, your guests, and your new hires because you knew he’d make a positive impact on them. His smile, his double high fives, his sign-off on every Pro Tip video:

Those weren’t just words. That was Cody.

He earned back-to-back Southern California PGA Section Awards along with several Desert Chapter PGA Awards, and the KemperSports Retailer of the Year award. He lit up the pro shop with his energy. And even now, his legacy lives on, in every swing taken to fund a scholarship, in every laugh we share recalling his jokes, and in every guest who tells us they “still remember that pro with the big grin and even bigger heart.”

    Even though I only met him a few times, I could tell what a truly wonderful person he was. Even we well-intentioned but slightly clueless Germans who came to the desert for golf lessons could immediately feel his passion. It wasn’t just a job — it was his calling.

    It’s such a great loss. But I like to believe he’s now looking down on the golf courses from above, expecting us to carry on and enjoy the game just as he always did.

The desert has a way of shaping people, just as it shapes the land. Each sunrise over Firecliff and Mountain View brings with it not only a new day for our golfers but also a reminder of the people who make these courses thrive. For me, few individuals embody that spirit more than Raul Melero.

Raul has been here since the very beginning, before the first putt dropped, before the first fairway stripe. He was part of the grow-in, part of the foundation that has made Desert Willow what it is today. Over nearly three decades at our resort, and 48 years in the industry, Raul’s steady hand and quiet leadership have shaped both turf and team alike.

A Life in Golf Maintenance

Raul’s journey began in 1977, when his uncle brought him to the United States. The very next morning, he went to work at Seven Lakes Country Club in Palm Springs. From that day forward, golf course maintenance became his life’s work.

He started here at Desert Willow as an irrigator and, by 1999, had earned the role of Assistant Superintendent. Ask Raul what he loved most in those early years and he’ll tell you: the irrigation. But with time, his answer evolved: the people.

“That’s Raul in a nutshell: someone who mastered the technical side but found his greatest fulfillment in relationships.”

What the Job Really Means

In our conversation, Raul shared a sentiment that still makes me smile:

The reality, of course, is far from that. Golf course maintenance is a craft, one that demands knowledge, vigilance, and resilience. And Raul’s advice to younger superintendents cuts to the heart of it: “It’s a bigger job than what I thought going into it. Make sure that you enjoy it.”

A Career of Accomplishments

When I asked Raul about the achievements he’s most proud of, he didn’t point to a single project. Instead, he spoke about the professional relationships he’s built and the lessons he’s learned from the superintendents he’s worked alongside at Desert Willow. That humility is part of what makes him so respected.

Still, his contributions this past year cannot go unmentioned. Raul played a central role in our turf reduction efforts and in leading an aggressive verticutting program on Mountain View Greens, work that will ensure healthier playing surfaces and stronger transitions for years to come.

While Raul embraces new tools, like moisture meters and refined overseeding practices, what stands out most is his belief in treating people fairly and with respect. That principle may not be “innovative” by today’s standards, but in truth, it’s timeless. It’s also the foundation of a healthy team, and a lesson worth carrying into the future of our industry.

What Drives Him

Raul doesn’t play golf himself, but he finds joy in something deeper: the satisfaction of seeing golfers enjoy the courses he has poured his life into. That, to me, is the heart of a superintendent’s calling. It’s not about our own rounds of golf; it’s about creating the best possible experience for every guest who walks these fairways.

When you’ve been in this business as long as I have, over 30 years and counting, you learn that an event isn’t just about linen colors or menu choices. It’s about people. It’s about stories. At Desert Willow Golf Resort, I’ve found the kind of canvas most event professionals only dream about: sweeping mountain views, sunsets that paint the sky in colors no designer could replicate, and a team that understands that hospitality is an art form.

I came to the desert from the East Coast, where speed and precision rule. Here, I discovered something rare: a pace that allows us to be present with our clients, to listen deeply, and to craft experiences that feel personal, timeless, and, dare I say, effortless.

When a couple comes to us dreaming of a wedding, or a family is planning a golden anniversary, my job isn’t to sell them on Desert Willow, it’s to learn what matters most to them. Do they want their guests to feel embraced by the desert landscape? Do they imagine a night filled with music, laughter, and food that sparks conversation long after the last toast? From that first phone call to the moment we dim the lights at the end of the evening, my team and I walk alongside our clients. We’re planners, yes. But we’re also translators of vision, caretakers of detail, and sometimes, when the nerves kick in, calmers of hearts.

Behind the Scenes: The Heart of Our Team

I’ll let you in on a secret: the real magic of our department isn’t the view or even the food, it’s the people. My team shows up with passion, creativity, and precision. We don’t just check boxes; we anticipate needs before clients even know to ask.

One of my favorite memories? A couple once told me their dream was to say their vows as the sun slipped behind the 18th hole. That moment, so fleeting, so exact, meant everything to them. We choreographed every detail, from timing the music to the champagne pour. To this day, they tell me that moment lives in their family’s storytelling. That’s what we do here: create memories that become part of someone’s life forever.

A huge shoutout to Robbie, who was an absolute dream to work with. From the very first tour to the day of the wedding, she was incredibly responsive, kind, and truly intuitive — she often knew exactly what I needed before I even had the words to ask. Her experience and calm, confident presence made the entire planning process feel easy and stress-free. We utilized her as our day of coordinator and she was worth her weight in gold. She took care of us personally making sure we received drinks and appetizers during cocktail hour, and even gave me a hug and tissues while I bawled my eyes out during the mother/son dance.

Stories That Stay With Us

We’ve hosted weddings where couples return years later for anniversaries. We’ve welcomed companies who use our retreat spaces to spark creativity and connection. We’ve stood alongside local organizations as they raised funds that changed lives.

Just this summer, we hosted the Eisenhower Emergency Medicine graduation, an evening of pride and promise. And I’ll never forget the gala for CV Alzheimer’s, an event that wasn’t just seamless but record-breaking in what it achieved for the community.
