For Chris and our course maintenance team, that quiet is already filled with purpose.

Long before a golfer reads a putt, settles into a perfect lie, or pauses to take in the mountain views, countless details have been considered, measured, and cared for. Course conditions don’t simply happen overnight. They are the result of planning, agronomic expertise, careful observation, teamwork, and a willingness to continually adapt.

A graduate of Cornell’s Turfgrass Maintenance program, Chris brings more than a decade of desert golf expertise to his role at Desert Willow.

As both Golf Course Superintendent and Regional Agronomist, he approaches the work with a combination of technical knowledge and hands-on leadership. Sustainability, innovation, and playability are not separate objectives; together, they help guide the decisions that shape the golf experience.

And much of that work happens where guests may never see it.

It happens in early mornings, changing weather conditions, irrigation decisions, turf management practices, equipment preparation, and the hundreds of details evaluated by a team that understands that seemingly small decisions can have a meaningful impact on a golfer’s round.

That dedication is ultimately reflected in something every golfer can appreciate: the playing surface beneath their feet.

Excellence Our Guests Can Feel

Perhaps the most meaningful measure of that work comes directly from the golfers who experience it.

For calendar year 2025, Desert Willow received a combined guest survey score of 9.5 out of 10 for course conditions. Those guest ratings earned Desert Willow recognition for Top Course Conditions in the KemperSports Public Access Portfolio, an honor presented at the KemperSports Leadership Conference in February.

For Chris and the team, recognition like this represents more than a number.

It reflects thousands of individual guest experiences, the first look down a fairway, the roll of a putt across a well-prepared green, and the confidence of knowing that the course has been thoughtfully cared for before you ever arrive at the first tee.

It is a clear example of a brand promise not simply communicated, but consistently delivered.

Celebrating Chris Bien

This year brings another reason to celebrate.

Chris was named the 2026 59club USA Superintendent of the Year through the Service Excellence Awards, recognizing his commitment to excellence and the standard of care he brings to his profession.

It is a well-deserved honor, and one we are proud to celebrate.

But perhaps one of the qualities that best represents Chris’s leadership is that course maintenance is never the work of one person. Exceptional playing conditions are created by a team, people bringing skill, pride, consistency, and attention to their responsibilities every day.

Chris’s leadership helps bring those efforts together around a shared purpose: creating the best possible experience for every golfer who steps onto the course.
